The questions people actually ask.

Buying

What exactly is this?

An offline virtual pet for the M5Stack StickS3: a tiny employee who works on real time. You are buying a software license, not hardware, so you need a StickS3 of your own. It is made by an independent developer, works with the M5Stack StickS3, and is not affiliated with M5Stack or an official M5Stack product.

What do I need to install it?

A computer (Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS), Chrome or Edge on it (desktop version), a USB-C cable that carries data, and your StickS3. A phone cannot install it: phone and tablet browsers cannot reach a device over USB. Buy on the phone, install on the computer.

How many devices does one code cover?

One StickS3. The first seal binds it to that device; after that, reinstalling, updating and restoring the license on the same device are unlimited and never need a new purchase.

I changed devices, or mine broke.

The website cannot move a license by itself. Contact the Xiaohongshu shop from your order and it will be handled by hand.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds follow Xiaohongshu's platform rules and the shop's after-sales policy. After a refund, the matching activation code is voided.

Installing and the license

If installing fails, is my code wasted?

No. Checking a code does not use it; it is bound to a device only after you have seen that device's ID and pressed Confirm. If anything fails after that, retrying uses the same license. A dropped connection, a pulled cable or a page reload never leaves you needing a second code.

What does a fresh install erase?

A fresh install (for a device that has never had NiuMagotchi) replaces every program and all data on it, the factory program included. A device already running NiuMagotchi is only updated, keeping the employee and the save. The page asks you to confirm before it erases anything.

Should I keep the code secret?

While it is unused, yes. Whoever applies the seal with it first gets it for their device. Do not post the full code in a note or a comment. Once it has sealed your device, it works only for that device.

What is the license backup file?

A small text file (niuma-license-DEVICE-ID.txt) you can download once the seal is on. If the device is ever wiped completely, the Restore license page puts the seal back with it — no internet, no code. It works only for its own device, so it is no use to anyone else, but keep it to yourself anyway.

What does this site learn about me?

When you activate, the browser sends our server exactly three things: the activation code, the device ID (the chip's factory number) and the firmware version on the device. Your save, your employee's name and your screenshots never leave your computer and device. After the seal, the device runs completely offline and never contacts any server. The site has no accounts, no cookies, no third-party analytics, and loads nothing from other sites; like every website, the server keeps ordinary access logs (including IP addresses) for a short while.

The page says the device is not responding.

It is almost certainly asleep. The screen turning off is normal and deliberate: press A on the front to wake it, then reconnect. If the computer cannot see it at all, press A first, then plug in. Still nothing: hold the power button about 6 seconds to switch it off, then on. If it has never had NiuMagotchi, not responding is expected — choose Fresh install on the onboarding page.

It never appears in the list.

Try another USB-C cable. Many cables — especially the ones that come with power banks — carry power but no data, and a charge-only cable is the commonest reason a device looks dead. If the screen lights up but the browser never lists it, the cable is the first thing to change.

Do I need to install drivers?

No. The device appears as a standard USB serial device, which Windows, macOS and Linux all support out of the box. If a page asks you to install a driver for it, that page is not ours.

Looking after him

Will updating erase my employee?

No. A device already running NiuMagotchi is only updated on the onboarding page, and the save comes along as is. Only a fresh install empties the device, and the page tells you clearly before it does.

The clock is an hour off twice a year.

A known limitation: the device keeps a fixed offset from UTC and does not know about daylight saving time. If your clocks change, adjust it under Settings → Time on the device. Mainland China and Japan do not observe DST, so most people never see this.

How long does the battery last?

Almost entirely down to how long you look at it, because the screen is the big drain. The device turns its screen off eagerly and can sit quietly in deep sleep for weeks. When the battery gets critical, it saves your employee's state before switching off.

It just chirped at me.

That is an alert: something genuinely needs attention — the coffee ran out, or his mood fell off a cliff. It happens at most four times a day and never between 22:00 and 08:00. You can turn it off completely in Settings.

I want to start over.

Settings → HR wipe, then hold A. Your current employee goes into the hall of fame; your clock, volume settings and the seal stay; and onboarding starts again with someone new.

Something really is wrong.

Start with the When something is wrong page and work down it in order. If that does not fix it, press Copy report on that page and paste it into your chat with the Xiaohongshu shop. The report has the device's own diagnostics and never your activation code.
